While out with Simon Doonan, Author, Fashion Commentator, Former Creative Director at Barney’s New York, Life Enthusiast and Friend…
I said to him let's talk Christmas and Christmas trees?
He must have done a few in his Creative Reign at Barneys as well as his own…
Click here for more of his Cult Creations.
Here’s his inspiration brief for your tree this year…
A Christmas tree is a tree….
Take your cue from Nature.
So why not fill it full of Birds?
These Little Guys are available from Cox & Cox Buy Here
Start collecting bird ornaments:
It could be a picture of a bird,
It could be a paper mâché thing,
It could be a bird ornament.
Start to accumulate a wild cross-section of Birds…
They look really good on a tree because Hello! it's a tree!
Let Art Inspire you…
One time I wanted to do like a Warhol tree.
Think where’s local to you - I went to the Met or the Modern in NYC.
I got every Warhol postcard they had and used them to decorate the tree…
In a sense that it was Warhol…and less heavy than Soup Cans…
So you can do something like that.
Or say you love Renaissance portraiture…
That’s your cue - you can collect a whole bunch of little postcards,
Museum postcards, and just Festoon Them on a tree, with other ornaments,
but let Renaissance – or your favorite Art be a theme.
Don’t limit yourself to Baubles
Be Creative
There’s room for a lot of Creative Expression with Trees.
At Barney’s, we've done them with everything …
Try Beauty for Beauty
We’ve used hair pieces and hair rollers and
all kinds of themed trees using stuff that's available.
Go to the beauty store and beauty supply store
Get colored braids
…anything to do with hair products makes a really good tree…
And style with your more traditional decorations.
The Most Important Thing is to Have Fun
Dress the Tree Up for a Great Party Celebration!
So be original, be authentic, and have FUN… and there you have it.
Simon Doonan’s book, The Camp 100: Glorious flamboyance, from Louis XIV to Lil Nas X, is out now.
